Understanding the Authority of Jesus 👑
We live in a world filled with influential names.
Some names are connected to political power. 🏛️
Some are connected to wealth and success. 💼
Some are connected to fame and popularity. 🌟
Some are connected to positions of leadership and authority.
No matter your age or stage of life, you've experienced the influence a name can carry.
But above every title, every position, every government, every kingdom, and every authority stands one name that will never lose its power or significance:
Jesus. ✝️
His name is greater than every earthly power, every spiritual force, and every circumstance we face.
But what makes the name of Jesus different from every other name?
Why does His name carry such authority?
The answer is found not only in what Jesus can do, but in the authority behind His name.
Power and Authority Are Not the Same Thing ⚡
Many people use the words power and authority interchangeably, but they are actually very different.
Power is the ability to accomplish something.
A bulldozer has power. 🚜
Electricity has power. ⚡
An athlete has power. 🏈
Power answers the question:
"What can be done?"
Authority is different.
Authority is the legal right to use power.
A police officer standing in traffic may not have the physical strength to stop dozens of vehicles. Yet when that officer raises a hand, traffic comes to a halt. 🚔
Why?
Because authority stands behind the badge.
Authority answers the question:
"Who has the right to do it?"
The same principle applies to Jesus.
His name is not powerful because it functions like a religious phrase or spiritual formula.
His name carries authority because all of heaven stands behind it. 🙌
When believers pray in the name of Jesus, trust in the name of Jesus, or call upon the name of Jesus, they are appealing to the authority of the risen King who reigns over every power, every kingdom, every circumstance, and every spiritual force.
Power tells us what Jesus can do.
Authority tells us why He can do it.
How Did Jesus Receive His Supreme Authority? 🤔
Many people recognize Jesus as a teacher.
Others know Him as a miracle worker.
Some see Him as a historical figure.
But Scripture reveals something even greater:
Jesus is the exalted King. 👑
The authority of His name was established through His exaltation.
The Path from Humility to Exaltation
Philippians 2:5-11 gives us a powerful picture of Christ's journey from humility to glory.
Jesus willingly set aside His rights and privileges and submitted Himself completely to the Father's will.
He chose service over status.
Obedience over self-promotion.
Sacrifice over comfort.
Though He was fully God, He stepped into our broken world, took the form of a servant, and became obedient even to death on a cross.
Think about that for a moment.
The Creator became a servant.
The King of Heaven became a sacrifice.
The One who deserved worship allowed Himself to be rejected.
Jesus did not lose His life.
He willingly laid it down.
He was not a victim of circumstances.
He became the Savior of the world through obedience.
God's Response to Jesus' Obedience
Because Jesus humbled Himself, God exalted Him.
Because Jesus obeyed, God elevated Him.
Because Jesus went to the cross, God gave Him the highest place of honor.
The Father took the One who had been mocked, beaten, and crucified and seated Him at the highest position in the universe.
This is what Scripture means by exaltation.
Jesus is no longer the suffering servant walking the roads of Galilee.
He is the risen and reigning Lord seated at the right hand of the Father.
His exaltation is God's declaration to all creation that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The One who wore a crown of thorns now wears a crown of glory. 👑
The One who was mocked now receives worship.
The One who was rejected by men has been exalted by God.
The One who was nailed to a cross now sits on heaven's throne.
How Far Does Jesus' Authority Reach? 🌎
The authority of Jesus is not limited to one nation, one generation, one people group, or one realm.
His authority extends over all creation.
Philippians tells us that every knee will bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.
Let's look at those three realms.
Authority in Heaven ☁️
The angels recognize His authority.
The archangels recognize His authority.
The hosts of heaven recognize His authority.
No angel competes with Him.
No heavenly being rivals Him.
No created power shares His throne.
Throughout Scripture, whenever heaven is opened, the focus remains the same:
Jesus is worshiped.
Jesus is exalted.
Jesus reigns.
There is no confusion in heaven about who sits on the throne.
Jesus reigns supreme.
Authority on Earth 🌍
This is where we live every day.
Governments rise and fall.
Economies fluctuate.
Leaders come and go.
Cultures change.
Technology advances.
Yet one truth remains unchanged:
Jesus Christ is Lord.
His authority is greater than political authority.
Greater than cultural authority.
Greater than financial authority.
Greater than human authority.
History is filled with rulers who believed their kingdoms would last forever.
Pharaohs built pyramids.
Caesars built empires.
Kings built monuments.
Dictators demanded worship.
Today, most occupy only a few pages in history books.
Meanwhile, millions of people around the world still gather every week to worship Jesus Christ.
Why?
Because earthly authority is temporary.
His authority is eternal.
Authority Under the Earth ⚔️
This points to the unseen spiritual realm.
Every force of darkness.
Every demonic power.
Every spiritual enemy.
Every rebellious force.
All are ultimately subject to Jesus Christ.
This is why demons reacted so strongly during Jesus' earthly ministry.
They recognized His authority before many people did.
They knew exactly who stood before them.
The authority of Jesus is not threatened by darkness.
Darkness has already been defeated.
The enemy may resist.
The enemy may oppose.
The enemy may deceive.
But the enemy cannot overthrow the authority of Jesus Christ.
What Response Does His Authority Demand? 🙏
The authority of Jesus is not merely something to recognize.
It demands a response.
Philippians tells us that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Every person who has ever lived will one day acknowledge this truth.
Some will do so willingly.
Others reluctantly.
But all will ultimately recognize His Lordship.
What Does It Mean That Jesus Is Lord?
Today, the word "Lord" is not used very often.
But in Scripture, Lord speaks of authority, ownership, rulership, and supremacy.
To confess Jesus as Lord means He is more than an advisor.
More than a helper.
More than a religious figure.
He is King.
He has the right to lead us.
The right to direct us.
The right to command our obedience.
The right to receive our worship.
Many people want Jesus as Savior but struggle with Jesus as Lord.
They want forgiveness without surrender.
Heaven without obedience.
Blessings without leadership.
But Scripture presents both.
The same Jesus who saves us is the same Jesus who leads us.
Bowing Now or Bowing Later
The Bible says every knee will bow.
The question is not if.
The question is when.
Today, God gives us the opportunity to bow willingly.
He invites us into a relationship with Him.
He offers grace.
Mercy.
Forgiveness.
Salvation.
One day, confession will be unavoidable.
Today, it is an invitation.
One day every knee will bow because His authority is undeniable.
Today we bow because His grace is irresistible.
Life Application: Living Under His Authority 💡
Knowing the authority of Jesus should change the way we live.
Here are three practical ways to apply this truth.
1. Submit Every Area of Your Life
Ask yourself:
Is there an area of my life I've been holding back from God?
A relationship?
A habit?
An attitude?
A decision?
A future plan?
The safest place to live is under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
2. Pray With Confidence
Too many believers pray as though they are approaching a reluctant God.
Instead, pray with confidence.
When fear comes, pray.
When anxiety comes, pray.
When challenges arise, pray.
Don't focus on the size of the problem.
Focus on the authority of the One whose name you carry.
3. Publicly Honor the Name of Jesus
Don't wait until someday to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Honor Him today.
Let your words, actions, attitudes, and conversations reflect your faith.
Encourage someone.
Pray for someone.
Invite someone.
Share what Jesus has done in your life.
Become a living testimony of the name above every name.
Final Thoughts ❤️
The authority of Jesus is not simply a doctrine to believe.
It is a reality to embrace.
The King who sits on the throne is the same Savior who died on the cross.
The One who has all authority is also the One who loves you enough to give His life for you.
His grace is available.
His invitation is extended.
And His name is still above every name.
So the question becomes:
Is Jesus merely part of your life, or is He truly Lord of your life?
