Your Past Isn't Your Name
Understanding the Identity Behind Jesus
Names carry weight.
When somebody says “Grandma,” you don’t just think of a word. You think about warmth ❤️, safety, food in the kitchen, memories, and wisdom you didn’t fully appreciate until later in life.
Because names are connected to identity.
And the same is true with Jesus.
The name Jesus isn’t just a religious phrase we say in church. His name represents a person:
Savior.
King.
Friend.
Healer.
Redeemer.
Shepherd. 🙌
A lot of people know the name Jesus, but don’t really know who He is.
Some know Him as a historical figure.
Some remember Him from Sunday school.
Some only call on Him when life starts falling apart.
But Jesus never wanted to simply be recognized.
He wants relationship.
Why Understanding Who Jesus Is Matters 📖
In John 14:6, Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
Notice He didn’t just point people toward truth.
He said:
“I AM the truth.”
He didn’t just offer life.
He said:
“I AM the life.”
Everything about Jesus is personal.
The phrase “I AM” connects back to Exodus 3:14 when God revealed Himself to Moses as “I AM.” Jesus wasn’t just making a statement. He was revealing His identity.
And honestly, in a world where truth and identity constantly shift, that matters more than ever.
Culture changes.
Opinions change.
Trends change.
But Jesus remains the same. 🙏
He is still hope.
Still peace.
Still truth.
Still life.
The Power Behind the Name 💥
A name only has authority because of who it belongs to.
If a random person walked into a bank demanding access to your account, nobody would listen. But if the account owner walks in, everything changes because authority is connected to identity.
Philippians 2 says God gave Jesus the name above every other name.
That means whatever you’re facing today:
fear,
anxiety,
addiction,
depression,
brokenness,
shame…
There is still power in the name of Jesus.
1. Jesus Is More Than a Savior — He Is God With Us 🤝
Many people know Jesus as Savior, but forget He is also Emmanuel, meaning “God with us.”
Jesus didn’t stay distant from people.
He stepped into ordinary life.
He experienced grief.
Pain.
Temptation.
Exhaustion.
Disappointment.
He sat with broken people.
He listened to hurting people.
He welcomed people others pushed away.
Everything about Jesus revealed a God who moves toward people, not away from them.
Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that Jesus understands our weaknesses because He walked through life just like we do.
That means when we pray, we are not talking to someone disconnected from our reality. We are talking to a Savior who understands exactly what it feels like to live in a broken world.
And sometimes the greatest comfort is simply knowing you are not alone.
2. Jesus Is Not Just a Teacher — He Is the Truth 🧭
We live in a world full of opinions, noise, and competing voices.
Everybody seems to have their own version of truth now.
But Jesus didn’t say He would simply teach truth.
He said:
“I AM the truth.”
That matters because many people today feel spiritually exhausted trying to figure out what is actually solid anymore.
Truth isn’t found in trends.
Truth isn’t found in culture.
Truth isn’t found in popularity.
Truth is found in Jesus.
Hebrews 13:8 says:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Just like people rely on GPS for direction, we need something trustworthy guiding our lives.
Imagine if your GPS constantly changed directions:
“Turn left… no wait… turn around…”
You’d lose confidence quickly.
That’s how many people feel spiritually today because the world keeps changing its definition of identity, morality, and purpose.
But Jesus stays constant. 🔥
3. Jesus Doesn’t Just Change Circumstances — He Changes Identity ✨
One of the most powerful things about Jesus is this:
People never stayed the same after encountering Him.
Simon became Peter.
Saul became Paul.
The woman at the well became a witness.
Because Jesus doesn’t just change behavior.
He changes identity.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says:
“Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
A lot of people today are carrying labels:
failure,
rejection,
shame,
fear,
addiction,
regret.
But your past is not your permanent name.
Ephesians 2:10 says we are God’s masterpiece 🎨
That means God doesn’t see you as an accident or a failure. He sees you as intentionally created, deeply loved, and full of purpose.
Just like an artist values what they create, God values you because you were created in His image.
Even when life feels unfinished, God is still working on you.
What This Means for Us 🙏
Stop building your identity on temporary things.
Success can’t define you.
Approval can’t heal you.
Social media can’t sustain you.
Only Jesus can.
Start walking with Jesus personally, not just knowing about Him.
And let Him redefine how you see yourself.
Because the truth is:
You are not who your past says you are.
You are who God says you are.
And when you truly know who Jesus is, it changes how you live, how you love, how you trust, and how you see yourself. ✝️
