Understanding the Power Behind the Name

Have you ever stopped and wondered why God chose the name Jesus? 🤔

It wasn’t random.
It wasn’t a family name.
It wasn’t based on what sounded good.

That name was given on purpose.

And when you understand why, it changes how you see God… and how you live your life.

The Name Was Given Before the Moment

God Speaks Identity Before Clarity

Look at Matthew 1:20–21.

Joseph is in a moment that doesn’t make sense. His fiancée is pregnant, and he knows it’s not his child. Everything feels confusing, uncertain, and honestly… overwhelming.

And right in the middle of that, God sends an angel with a message:

“You are to name him Jesus…”

That’s it.

God didn’t explain everything.
He didn’t answer every question.
He didn’t remove the stress.

He gave a name.

Mary’s Story Looks the Same

In Luke 1:30–31, Mary hears the same thing:

“You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.”

Same pattern.

Different person, same kind of moment.

Confusing. Unexpected. Not what they planned.

And again, God gives identity before everything makes sense.

What This Means for Us

We usually want clarity first.

We want to know:

  • What’s happening

  • Why it’s happening

  • How it’s going to work out

Then we’ll trust.

But God works differently.

He says, “I’m going to show you who I am… before you understand what’s going on.”

Some of you are in that kind of moment right now.

Things don’t make sense.
You’re waiting on answers.
You’re trying to figure it out.

And God’s response isn’t always a full explanation.

Sometimes… it’s a reminder of His name.

The Name Was Given With a Purpose

Jesus Means “The Lord Saves”

The angel didn’t just give the name—he explained it:

“You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

That name literally means:

The Lord saves.

Not “might save.”
Not “tries to help.”

He saves. 🙌

What Does That Actually Mean?

When we say “He saves,” we’re talking about more than just one moment.

He saves us from:

  • Sin and the weight that comes with it

  • Guilt and shame that follow us

  • Separation from God

  • The pressure of trying to carry everything on our own

And He saves us for:

  • A new identity

  • A new way of living

  • A real relationship with God

That’s not small.

That’s life-changing.

We’re Used to Fixing Ourselves

Let’s be honest—most of us were raised to handle things on our own.

Something’s wrong? Fix it.
Messed up? Do better.
Struggling? Push through.

And we bring that same mindset into our relationship with God.

We try to clean ourselves up first.
We try to get everything right before coming to Him.

But the name Jesus reminds us:

That’s not your job.

You don’t save yourself.
You don’t fix everything first.

You come as you are… and let Him do what only He can do.

The Name Was Given With Authority

God Didn’t Ask—He Declared

Mary and Joseph didn’t choose the name.

They were given the name.

Why does that matter?

Because the one who sends the mission has the authority to name it.

And when God gave the name Jesus, He put His authority behind it.

The Name Above Every Name

Philippians 2:9–10 tells us that God gave Jesus:

“The name above all other names…”

That means when you say His name, you’re not just speaking words.

You’re calling on authority.

Let’s Make That Real

There are things we face every day:

Anxiety 😟
Stress
Family issues
Financial pressure
Uncertainty about the future

And sometimes those things feel bigger than us.

But here’s the truth:

Your situation does not outrank His name.

When you say “Jesus,” you’re not speaking into the air.

You’re calling on a name backed by God Himself.

How to Live This Out

1. Call on His Name First, Not Last

Don’t wait until everything falls apart.

Start with Him.

When pressure hits… say Jesus.
When your thoughts start racing… say Jesus.

2. Bring What You’ve Been Carrying

Stop bringing the “put together” version of yourself.

Bring the real stuff.

The stress.
The struggle.
The things you haven’t told anyone.

He can handle it.

3. Trust His Name Before You See Change

Don’t wait for everything to make sense.

Trust now.

Because God didn’t wait to give the name.

Life Application

This week, when life feels heavy or unclear…

Start with the name of Jesus.

Not your fear.
Not your confusion.

Start with His name.

And trust Him to do what He said He would do.

Reflection Questions

  • What have you been trying to carry on your own that you need to give to Jesus?

  • Where do you need to trust Him before things make sense?

  • Are you treating Jesus like a helper… or trusting Him as your Savior?

Final Thought

The name of Jesus isn’t just something we say in church.

It’s a name filled with power, purpose, and authority.

And when you don’t know what to do next…

Just say Jesus. ✨
