Why Does Human Life Have Value?

Every Person Bears God’s Image 🖼️

When God says, “You must not murder” (Exodus 20:13), He isn’t randomly setting a boundary. He’s protecting something precious.

Think of a museum with a “Do Not Touch” sign in front of a masterpiece. The rule reveals the value.

In the same way, this command reveals something powerful:

Every human being carries the image of God.

In a scroll-past-faces culture, it’s easy to forget that.

We:

  • Reduce people to political labels

  • Dismiss those who disagree with us

  • Roll our eyes at the next generation

  • Criticize the one before us

But every person you lock eyes with —
👶 the newborn
🧑‍🎓 the student
👨‍👩‍👧 the parent
👵 the grandparent
— carries God’s imprint.

Strong or weak.
Successful or struggling.
Visible or unseen.

All image bearers.

Life in the Womb Is Sacred 🤍

That sacred value includes life in the womb.

Psalm 139 reminds us that God forms each person intentionally. Jeremiah 1:5 tells us God knew us before we were born.

Scripture doesn’t speak of the unborn as “potential life.” It speaks of them as known by God.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about biblical conviction:

Life belongs to God — from conception to natural death.

Grace for Those Who Carry Guilt 🌿

At the same time, we must say this clearly and compassionately:

Some reading this have experienced abortion. Some carry grief. Some carry guilt.

Hear this:

The same Bible that affirms life’s sacredness also proclaims God’s mercy.

Romans 8:1 says, “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”

If you have brought that part of your story to God, shame is not your identity. You are not disqualified. You are not second-class in His kingdom.

Part of restoring the value of life is restoring the value of your life.

And once you understand that your life is still precious to God, you begin to see that everyone else’s is too.

When Do We Forget Life’s Worth? Murder Starts in the Heart 💭

Jesus takes this command deeper.

In Matthew 5, He explains that murder doesn’t begin with hands — it begins in the heart.

It begins when:

  • Anger turns into contempt

  • Frustration turns into labeling

  • Hurt turns into hatred

Most of us will never take someone’s life physically.

But we can slowly erase their worth in our minds.

And once someone is no longer sacred to you, they become easier to dismiss… easier to damage… easier to destroy with words.

The Slow Leak of Anger

Anger rarely explodes overnight.

It leaks.

A comment that hurt you.
A betrayal you never processed.
A disappointment you buried instead of dealt with.

In a distracted world, we don’t slow down long enough to notice what’s leaking out of us.

So we:

  • Scroll angry

  • Argue quickly

  • Assume motives

  • Speak sharply

Not because we want to murder someone.

But because somewhere along the way, we forgot what their life was worth.

How Societies Unravel 🌎

When millions of people forget that at the same time, it doesn’t stay online.

It spills into streets.
It shows up in headlines.
It reshapes culture.

Outrage spreads faster than truth.
Disagreement turns into dehumanizing.
People become labels instead of souls.

Culture doesn’t shape itself. It’s shaped by hearts.

And hearts are shaped by what they worship.

If we worship outrage, we become outraged.
If we worship power, we justify harm.
If we worship self, anyone who threatens us becomes the enemy.

That’s why this commandment is urgent.

How Do We Become Life-Givers? 🌅

The commandments were never just about restraining evil. They were about shaping a different kind of people.

If murder destroys life, obedience promotes it.

It’s not just “Don’t take life.”
It’s “Be someone who gives life.”

See People as God Sees Them 👀

When you remember that someone bears God’s image, your posture changes.

You:

  • Speak differently

  • Respond differently

  • Forgive differently

Teenagers can give life in a group chat.
Parents can give life in their tone.
Grandparents can give life in their encouragement.
Church members can give life in how they disagree.

Life-giving is for every generation.

Choose to Give Life Daily 🗣️

Being a life-giver means:

  • Pausing before speaking when angry

  • Correcting without crushing

  • Choosing grace over gossip

  • Staying steady when culture is screaming

You don’t have to win every argument.
You don’t have to fix every headline.

But you can refuse to contribute to the damage.

That matters.

Receive the Life Jesus Offers ✝️

Jesus said He came to give a “rich and satisfying life.”

Not just material blessing — but spiritual fullness.

A whole heart.
Freedom from condemnation.
Joy in hardship.
Peace in chaos.

Some people don’t need a behavior adjustment.

They need a new heart.

If you’ve been angry because you’re empty…
Reactive because you’re restless…
Harsh because you’re hurting…

Jesus offers transformation from the inside out.

Life Application 📖

This week:

1️⃣ Examine your heart.
Is there anger you’ve been feeding? Someone you’ve written off? Resentment you’ve justified?

2️⃣ Repair what you can.
Send the text. Make the call. Change your tone. Offer the apology.

You can’t fix the whole world.
But you can refuse to contribute to the damage.

3️⃣ Receive grace.
If you’ve never surrendered your life to Jesus — or need to recommit — today can be your beginning.

The God who said “You must not murder” is the God who sent His Son to die for sinners.

Life is sacred.

That includes yours.

Questions for Reflection 🤔

  • Where have I forgotten that someone’s life is sacred to God?

  • What anger or resentment do I need to bring to Him?

  • How can I intentionally give life through my words this week?

  • If I’ve been reactive or harsh, what hurt might be driving that?

In a world that treats people as disposable…

Choose differently.

Choose steady.
Choose sacred.
Choose to give life.
